Phil's Beast Wars Fuzor Quickstrike Review

Quickstrike

Quickstrike is the only Fuzor apart from Silverbolt to appear in the Cartoon and thus the only other Fuzor to appear in the Beast Wars metals toy range as D-45 or in VS-45 with Transmetal Airazor continuing the BW metals policy of where possible pairing a show character with a non show version of a character.

Quickstrike is a combination of a Scorpion and a Snake - specifically a Cobra judging by the snake's head. The snake forms the tail and stinger of the scorpion so of the Fuzors this probably looks the closest to an actual animal. The majority of his body is molded in clear orange/yellow Plastic - one of the last Predacon's to be built like this - which is covered with metallic green patterns. The upper arms of the stinger and the tails are brown plastic and the fixed scorpion legs are orange. The claw arms have ball joints at shoulder & elbow, bend at the wrists and both parts of the claw move open. The scorpion head moves up & down. The energon chip rubsign is on the base of the tail. The tail has six segments between body and Cobra head with a ball joint at the top and a socket at the bottom of each giving the tail superb posability. The jaw opens on the cobra head.

The toy's gimmick - they were still including a special feature on the Fuzor basics - is housed in the cobra head. Squeeze in on the under side of the head, place the head in water and release. The head is then filled with water and the next time you squeeze it it'll fire as a water pistol.

TF: Pull the scorpion legs away from the base. Fold the scorpion head under the beast. While looking at the front of the toy turn the tail so it's on your left and the legs stick out the right. Look at the underside of the toy and fold the head out. Bend the very back of the toy 90 degrees - where the tail base meets 2 brown struts - then bend the struts down 90 degrees as well folding the head through the gap. Straighten the claws in front of the toy with the larger claw halves facing up. Open the claws out and stand on the claws. Fold both sets of scorpion legs together to form a claw.

Quickstrike is unique amongst the scorpion TFs in that he's the only one (that I can think of at least - corrections to the usual address) that ends up standing on the scorpion claws. The rest - Headmasters Scorponok, Master Force Black Zarak, Pretender Pincer, Action Master Elite Double Punch and BW, Energon & Movie Scorponok - all use the scorpion claws as hands. So points to the toy designers for doing something original. Quickstrike's arms are formed from the tail (his right) with the same articulation the tail has and the other (his left) is from the scorpion legs and bits found under the toy. This has ball joints at shoulder & elbow and as mentioned above the oversized claw formed from his scorpion legs opens & closes. Legs have the same articulation as the scorpion claw arms and with a large foot base do a good job of balancing the toy.

Overall: Superb basic. Covers all the basic requirements of the toy, throws in some extra articulation in the tail that larger toys don't have, shows some design originality in where the scorpion claws end up and looks great - a combination of the colour balance and the body parts cast in clear plastic. Quite possibly the best Beast Wars Basic !

Very surprisingly this toy has never been recoloured or remolded to make a normal scorpion basic !
