Megatron

Megatron - like Cybertron Optimus Prime - comes packaged in robot mode. It's a big robot mode too, which will tower over all other Megatrons. He's got good articulation all over, and he balances well. The hands have standard sized fist holes, and there are some additional holes for mounting weapons on his wrists. He comes with a unique clear Planet Key which looks like a face - the Cybertron version is numbered lh7f. Each of his forearms has a slot for a Planet Key which reveals his weapons - one dispenses his wheel gun - think BW Rhinox weapon - the other a sort of finned gun thing. There's also a slot on it's back that pops up 2 engines either side of the missile launchers - this may make some noise but I've not put in the AAA batteries it needs yet. There are various pegs on his body for putting other modes together which are the same size as Minicon posts but these are solid ones - a missed opportunity here perhaps ? Lots of rubber has gone into Megs construction on various pieces.

TF isn't simple but relatively intuitive - fold the horns on the head back, then the back up - legs now trail behind the car. Arms fold under the chest plate to become the nose of the car, and the front wheels and spoilers fold down from his back pack. A little twisting of the legs and the waist - the waist ends up halfway down the car - and the lower legs form the sides of the car, leaving a little twisting of the feet to become the rear spoilers.

As Mark (I think) said the other day "He turns into the freaking Batmobile man! How can this possibly be A Bad Thing?" And boy is it big in car mode, possibly the largest car TF ever done. Rolls along nicely on the floor. Pop up engines is slightly more obvious here, again can't talk about the sound gimmick. Nice. However I don't really associate Car Modes with Megatron (who had been a car once before)

From here you separate the front spoilers and wheel sections from the nosecone, fold them back and peg them into the back of the car to form the jet mode, which, thanks to Cybertron, is a little more like a Megatron mode. OK but it does make you think it's a "look we've got a 3rd mode out of this" In fact both the car and the jet bring Gigatron/RID Megatron to mind.......

So not a bad toy, quite fun in fact, just not Megatron, and a little odd designwise compared to some other Transformers. I'd put money on it being designed by whoever did Energon Mirage the previous year. I've cooled on it a lot over time and no longer own one.

Megatron, like Optimus Prime, has the ability to replace his arms with add ons by folding his arms into his shoulder. Like Optimus there's only one toy mould that will combine with it: Leo Breaker (although the Nemesis Prime repaint is probably a better toy to be using as the colour scheme matches Megatron better) However this lion limb looks so disproportionately huge on Megatron and makes you feel that a deluxe sized toy that also forms a limb would work better. (The Leobreaker limb works much better sizewise with Optimus Prime)

Megatron was sold in Japan as Galaxy Force toy GD-01 Master Megatron.

Galvatron

The inevitable Galvatron repaint this year turns all the purple & orange of Megatron into black and makes the grey silver. When you look at the two toys side by side you wonder if this would make a better Megatron and the original a better Galvatron ! The key becomes orange and is numbered l65x.

This repaint was released in Galaxy Force in Japan as GD-14 Master Galvatron.
