Superion Maximus

Superion Maximus is formed from the following Energon toys together with their Superlink names and probable original Aerialbot counterparts:

A1 Treadshot (Air Raider/Air Raid)
A2 Sky Shadow (Sling/Slingshot)
A3 Terradive (Skydive)
A4 Windrazor (Firebolt/Fireflight)
A5 Storm Jet (Afterburner/Silverbolt)

Treadshot & Windrazor's limb mode involves the jet mode with the legs of the robot unhitched from the sides and the waist separated in two. The legs are then folded out along the nose of the with the front of the lower leg facing the same way as the top of the cockpit. The legs are then fixed in place with the arms. The weapons lock into the plastic bar to form the hands - one slides in from the side, the other pegs through the hole - then locks push up from the bar and *should* clamp round the side of the foot to hold it in place. The weapons can then be stretched out for feet or folded up for hands. Neither limb configuration looks that good - both are very wide with the leg looking unbalanced next to the thin leg formed from Sky Shadow/Terradive while the arm mode has a hand with hugely spaced out fingers. For a leg you'll get a better result by rotating the jet 90 degrees at the joint to the leg of Storm Jet so the spark crystal faces out then moving the feet so that both guns face vaguely forward.

Sky Shadow & Terradive's Limb mode is basically the jet mode with the wings folded in. Plug in the folded up cannon into the gun for an arm. Separate the cockpit to form the robot's feet and peg the folded out cannon into the robot's feet to form a foot. It's the better of the two Aerialbot limbs, you almost wish there were 4 of them. Well until you see the other 4 combiner limb types !

Origami is required to form the chest mode from Storm Jet with the combined robot head folding out of Storm Jet's chest. Unfortunately the stability of the chest mode rather relies on it pegging together ...... and the pegs just don't want hold together in several places. This then affects the stability of the combine form which isn't great cos the legs don't lend themselves to stability either.

Superion

Superion was sold as a boxset in either Universe 2.0 or as part of the Revenge of the Fallen movie line. The boxset contains:

Airazor & Air Raid (repaints of the F-22 Raptors: A1 Treadshot / A4 Windrazor)
Fireflight & Skydive (repaints of the A-10 Tankbusters A2 Sky Shadow / A3 Terradive)
Silverbolt (Repaint of A5 Storm Jet)

As you'll see most of the names now are from the original Aerialbots, except for Airazor that takes the place of Slingshot. However I feel there's been a mistake here as the Airazor name is attached to a different to to Superlink Sling (see above) and Fireflight has has also swapped the other way. The problem is Fireflight is now a brown A-10 Tankbuster with yellow highlights that can be posed with wings extended behind the body not unlike the original Beast Wars Airazor. Almost certainly a mix up with the names here and in my house the brown A-10 will be called Airazor.

The instructions in this boxset specify which toy forms which limb - Airazor & Fireflight are arms while Skydive & Windrazor are legs.

The mould has deteriorated since it's Energon use - several parts are looser - Silverbolt came to pieces when transforming loosing his jet nose and one of the fold on flaps. The A-10 limbs refuse to attach as legs, the Raptor weapons don't attach too well as feet or hands and I've had the Raptor legs popping off at the knees. The moulds never were that good in combined mode anyway and this new version is much worse. The only real plus point to this version is that the body seems to hold together much better - the pegs that hold the center robot's arms in place are a lot better fit even if the one to hold the chest in place isn't !

However since the boxset has been seen for as low as £15 it's a bargain for a deluxe & 4 basics when Movie deluxes are selling for £13 each.
