Barricade

Barricade is a Decepticon Police Car - a first ? Nice Black and White car mode with lightbars on top. A Decepticon symbol subverts the centre of the police badge and the motto "to protect and serve" is replace with "to punish and enslave". Nice vehicle.

Barricade has a passenger on board though - flip the grid on the front of the car down and pull out the engine. This unfolds into Frenzy - a thin skeletal robot whose only meaningful articulation is his shoulders. A nice add in. As a bonus if you only fold Frenzy's legs up he can be reinserted and locked into Barricade leaving the head stick up as a hood ornament.

TF: Doesn't matter if Frenzy is on board or not. Pull the sides of the back of the car away. Wiggle the sides of the front out - from the wheels back - and slide the side pieces forward and to the sides. Pull the back of the car onto the back of the roof. Pull the back of the car down and back a bit. Look at the underside of the toy and separate the back of the car into the legs, which are then each slid slightly to the sides and up at the hips (very similar to the diagram in my Wreckage review). Fold the bonnet onto the robot's waist - it doesn't lock, just sits there. Pull the bonnet in half to the sides and flip up the robot's head. Flip up the robot's thumbs, bend at elbow and pose which might be difficult the first time due to the odd direction of the legs.

The resulting robot is very attractive if not a traditional TF, with bent legs, clawed hands that don't hold anything and a very angular face. Almost completely black with some purple highlights and a pair of red lightpiped eyes. Frenzy can be removed just as easy in this mode too.

You'll note I didn't mention the automorph: he doesn't have one. But he does have a gimmick in robot mode. There's a little trigger just below his left elbow which fires his left forearm forward. Nice.

Apart from his odd stance and the body not locking together quite as you'd expect it too this is a great toy. Recommended. 2nd best in the first wave after Wreckage.

Barricade is a Wave 1 Movie deluxe toy also available in Japan as Movie toy MD-02. He was available in a First Encounter 2-pack with Concept Camaro Bumblebee. A similar version was available as Screen Battles: First Encounter Barricade with figurines of Frenzy, Mikaela & Sam - the Frenzy within the chest is non-removable here. Premium Barricade modifies the paint scheme slightly while Allspark Barricade has blue highlights and comes with a red Frenzy (Rumble !).
