Meantime

More Real Gear, more real good toys. But you already know I'm an adherent to the cause. Sadly these are the last new moulds in the Real Gear line but there's some spanking "better than the original" recolours yet to come.

My set of Real Gear wave 3 came courtesy of our friends at HLJ.com. The final amount hasn't cleared my account yet but looks like including shipping it was at around UK retail.

Mean Time is a watch. If you suggested to me a year ago that the were going to make a TF watch, I would have replied that you were barking mad and it would come out looking like a cheap knock off. Well...... It's rather good. The strap is made from think interlinked sections of dark blue plastic that bend (stiffly) at regular intervals. The link is made by putting 2 ball studs through one of 2 pairs of holes depending on how big you want it. The maximum wristband size would fit a child, but it's too small for me. The links are stiff enough though that it will hang onto your wrist when bent round it, and indeed I've typed all the text up till now while wearing mine. The screen on the watch is 90 degrees round from the normal. so you need to be looking down your arm and not sideways on. The screen displays a Decepticon symbol, the time 5:17:40 and WE 01-02. There's a couple of solid fake buttons protruding from just above the Decepticon symbol. All in all it's quite chunky, so would appeal to a child. Or an adult who never had a Blake's 7 Teleport bracelet and wanted one. So that'd be me then.

TF: Similar to Spyshot in that everything's moving round a central point: First flatten the watch strap out and lay down so the Decepticon symbol is to the front and pointing upwards. About half way between the penultimate and last bends in the strap you should be able to pull the upper half of the strap up, leaving the far ends of the upper halves attached to the lower halves. The first bend on each lower half should then fold from the sides down to under the watch face causing the head to spring up from the buttons, and the lower halves of the straps to become the legs. The ends of the legs are double sized - fold the end of this segment up to become the feet and then bend the outer half back to become the heel spurs. Meanwhile the upper halves of the straps have become the arms - flip the hands out the end, rotate round 180 degrees at the shoulder so the empty non coloured side faces forward, and then fold down to the sides.

Resulting robot has hit the articulation jackpot - he can kneel down unsupported and raise him arm above his head by bending it out to the sides ! Bends at ankle and knee, rotating swivel just bellow the hip, ball jointed hip, inner shoulder (part of the TF) that folds up, ball jointed shoulder, rotating swivel for his bicep, bendable elbow and wrist. Post hole in hand is sub standard size but he can (with a little wiggling to get them in) hold BW Cheetor's weapons so that'll give you and idea how big it is. Head is an orange visored lightpipe, with a nose and a chin strap, and a lovely head design with 2 multi panelled horns.

This could have been a big steaming pile of poo. Instead it's a wonderful toy. You want this.

Meantime is a Movie 2007 Real Gear Wave 3 toy sold with High Score 100. He was sold in the UK and was available in Japan as toy number MD-21

Midnighter XR-4

Midnighter swaps the dark blue plastic for a dark grey to produce a repaint that's a bit plain and drab looking. The moulded Decepticon symbol makes sure he stays on the same side.

Midnighter was a Movie wave 6 toy together with Photon T-34 & Twitcher F451, none of which were sold in the UK or Japan.
